The WAVY littoral configuration has been demonstrated to work reliably in coastal areas, achieving very good data transmission rates for real-time applications.

There are many potential applications for this WAVY drifter! One possible application is the study of nearshore processes in beaches, with the added advantage of possibly involving citizens in the process. The combined trajectory and wave data acquisition provide invaluable data to fully describe rip and littoral drift currents, and their relation to the sea state, lenght scales, bathymetry, and other factors.

The WAVY Littoral can also be used to track river flows and assist in the study of sediment dynamics or river discharges, as demonstrated in the WAVY Test Campaign on the River Corrib (Galway, Ireland) with the assistance of the Irish Marine Institute.

Another interesting use case is the monitoring of hydrodynamic conditions at the entrance of major harbours or tracking of oil spills.  In the WAVY Littoral Campaign in collaboration with SAGA Project, the WAVY drifters were deployed at the entrance of Portimão Harbour, an important fishing and local transports harbour in the southern Portuguese coast, to validate a model for a Port Management Support System.

There are many more ways the WAVY Littoral can help the ocean scientist community and the curious individual too… For those who want to study any type of coastal, nearshore or littoral process this may be the right drifter to help collect valuable data!

Let us know how the WAVY Littoral can bring value to your marine activities

The MELOA team is currently deploying the WAVY drifters to validate and implement use cases! If you have a potential application for the WAVY Littoral that you would like to try out, please get in touch!
