The international conferences and workshops that the MELOA team had planned to participate in were cancelled as a result of the global pandemic. Yet, the team was able to engage in online initiatives, and accomplish exciting outreach and promotion results.
Matias Carandell, PhD researcher at our partner SARTI - UPC (Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech), presented at the IEEE Oceans Global Congress, and was distinguished with the second prize of the Student Poster Competition. Matias’ current research field is wave energy harvesting systems, and the paper presented was “Impact on the Wave Parameters Estimation of a Kinetic Energy Harvester Embedded into a Drifter”. The team also participated in Oceanology 2020 in November, presenting an online poster with the work developed in the project, as well as promoting the WAVY drifters’ benefits and use cases.

Another great outreach achievement is that MELOA is now an official data provider for NextGEOSS Catalogue, a centralised European hub for Earth observation data. The WAVY data collected during the field campaigns on the Portuguese and Spanish coast is now available at the NextGEOSS Catalogue, under the Marine thematic area. The NextGEOSS Catalogue maintains a constantly growing data catalogue covering a wide range of Earth Observation data, enabling cooperation with the MELOA Catalogue to maximise the reach of the data collected by the WAVY drifters.
