MELOA: The Evolution of the Surface Drifters

Observing the marine environment allows for a better understanding of coastal and ocean dynamics and can help in decision making processes. But to ensure a sustainable preservation of the marine environment, there is a continuous need for solutions that efficiently monitor the Ocean to support research, public policies, economic activities, human health, recreation and many other uses of the Ocean.

Surface drifters have been used in Oceanography for over a century to gather information about the Ocean. The evolution of technology also promoted significant changes in drifters since the early days, and in their capabilities. With the aim of covering marine observation gaps, MELOA is further advancing the WAVY surface drifters.
